Building a Trail Turnpike

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

The large muddy area on the white/blue trail at the south end of the grassy area has been a persistent issue for years. Standing water up to four inches deep accumulates here, even thru the summer. This Saturday it was fixed by extending a narrower "turnpike" through the muddy area.

The Pequonnock Valley Trail Care group was joined by the FCNEMBA trail crew and a few hardy volunteers. Land Managers had provided rocks, process gravel, lumber and geotech and gave us their blessing to use a rugged ATV and trailer to get the job done.

The bottom layer of rocks keeps the tread above water but allows water to drain as needed. Culverts were added as well to provide additional fast drainage (and ensure turtles and other swamp dwelling creatures can travel freely).

A few hikers walked by during the session and commented that the turnpike is welcome improvement from the mess that was there before...

What is the Pequonnock Valley Trail Care (PVTC)?

The Pequonnock Valley Trail Care is group of local park users who love the park and maintain the trails on a regular basis. From armoring wet spots, to coordinating with the land managers to remove tree blowdowns; we are actively engaged in keeping the trails clear and sustainable.
