The New Canaan Railroad - a Connecticut Branch Line

Historical Maps

Connecticut was criss crossed by a large array of independent railroads in 1893. The New Canaan Railroad was one of the shortest branch lines in the state.

Orginally bult for transporting agricultural products out of New Canaan, the New Cannan Railroad was eventually absorbed by the ever-growing New Haven Railroad and its revenues instead came from passengers, many seeking "summer solace" away from the harsh NYC urban environment.
